This man is about to launch himself in his homemade rocket to prove the Earth is flat
Seeking to prove that a conspiracy of astronauts fabricated the shape of the Earth, a California man intends to launch himself 1,800 feet high on Saturday in a rocket he built from scrap metal.
Assuming the 500-mph, mile-long flight through the Mojave Desert does not kill him, Mike Hughes told the Associated Press, his journey into the atmosflat will mark the first phase of his ambitious flat-Earth space program.
Hughes’s ultimate goal is a subsequent launch that puts him miles above the Earth, where the 61-year-old limousine driver hopes to photograph proof of the disc we all live on.
“It’ll shut the door on this ball earth,” Hughes said in a fundraising interview with a flat-Earth group for Saturday’s flight. Theories discussed during the interview included NASA being controlled by round-Earth Freemasons and Elon Musk making fake rockets from blimps.
Hughes promised the flat-Earth community that he would expose the conspiracy with his steam-powered rocket, which will launch from a heavily modified mobile home — though he acknowledged that he still had much to learn about rocket science.
“This whole tech thing,” he said in the June interview. “I’m really behind the eight ball.”

That said, Hughes isn’t a totally unproven engineer. He set a Guinness World Record in 2002 for a limousine jump, according to Ars Technica, and has been building rockets for years, albeit with mixed results.
“Okay, Waldo. 3 . . . 2 . . . 1!” someone yells in a test fire video from 2012.
There’s a brief hiss of boiling water, then . . . nothing. So Hughes walks up to the engine and pokes it with a stick, at which point a thick cloud of steam belches out toward the camera.
He built his first manned rocket in 2014, the Associated Press reported, and managed to fly a quarter-mile over Winkelman, Ariz.
As seen in a YouTube video, the flight ended with Hughes being dragged, moaning from the remains of the rocket. The injuries he suffered put him in a walker for two weeks, he said.

And the 2014 flight was only a quarter of the distance of Saturday’s mile-long attempt.
And it was based on round-Earth technology.
Hughes only recently converted to flat-Eartherism, after struggling for months to raise funds for his follow-up flight over the Mojave.
It was originally scheduled for early 2016 in a Kickstarter campaign — “From Garage to Outer Space!” — that mentioned nothing about Illuminati astronauts, and was themed after a NASCAR event.
“We want to do this and basically thumb our noses at all these billionaires trying to do this,” Hughes said in the pitch video, standing in his Apple Valley, Calif., living room, which he had plastered with drawings of his rockets.
“They have not put a man in space yet,” Hughes said. “There are 20 different space agencies here in America, and I’m the last person that’s put a man in a rocket and launched it.” Comparing himself to Evel Knievel, he promised to launch himself from a California racetrack that year as the first step in his steam-powered leap toward space.
The Kickstarter raised $310 of its $150,000 goal.

Hughes made other pitches, including a plan to fly over Texas in a “SkyLimo.” But he complained to Ars Technica last year about the difficulty of funding his dreams on a chauffeur’s meager salary.
A year later, he called into a flat-Earth community Web show to announce that he had become a recent convert.
“We were kind of looking for new sponsors for this. And I’m a believer in the flat Earth,” Hughes said. “I researched it for several months.”
The host sounded impressed. Hughes had actually flown in a rocket, he noted, whereas astronauts were merely paid actors performing in front of a CGI globe.
“John Glenn and Neil Armstrong are Freemasons,” Hughes agreed. “Once you understand that, you understand the roots of the deception.”
The host talked of “Elon Musk’s fake reality,” and Hughes talked of “anti-Christ, Illuminati stuff.” After half an hour of this, the host told his 300-some listeners to back Hughes’s exploration of space.
While there is no one hypothesis for what the flat Earth is supposed to look like, many believers envision a flat disc ringed by sea ice, which naturally holds the oceans in.
What’s beyond the sea ice, if anything, remains to be discovered.
“We need an individual who’s not compromised by the government,” the host told Hughes. “And you could be that man.”
A flat-Earth GoFundMe subsequently raised nearly $8,000 for Hughes.
By November, the AP reported, his $20,000 rocket had a fancy coat of Rust-Oleum paint and “RESEARCH FLAT EARTH” inscribed on the side.
While his flat-Earth friends helped him finally get the thing built, the AP reported, Hughes will be making adjustments right up to Saturday’s launch.
But he won’t be able to test the rocket before he climbs inside and attempts to steam himself at 500 mph across a mile of desert air. And even if it’s a success, he's promised his backers an even riskier launch within the next year, into the space above the disc. He told Ars Technica last year that the second phase of his mission might involve floating in a balloon up to 20,000 feet above the ground, then rocket-packing himself into outer space.
“It’s scary as hell,” Hughes told the AP. “But none of us are getting out of this world alive.”
This is true. And yet some hope to live to see its edges.
Even a Kid Can Prove the Earth Is Round: Here's How
Could 2,000 years of belief be wrong? Are we in fact living on a disc rather than a globe? One believer from the Flat Earth Society is determined to find out. "Mad" Mike Hughes is all set to build his own rocket to see for himself that the Earth is flat.
For the last 50 years, we've been able to view pictures of the Earth from space, which might seem like all the proof you need to see that our planet is in fact round. But the awareness of how easily images can be doctored and the growth of internet conspiracy theories appears to have fueled a resurgence of belief in a flat Earth.
At the same time, there's a lack of understanding of the science that has long been used to demonstrate that we live on a globe, without the need to leave it. I wish Hughes well with his endeavor, as he has at least been willing to try and prove his theory. Perhaps if more people really could see for themselves the evidence, we might be able to reverse this worrying trend. A good place to start would be by making sure children have the chance to try out simple experiments in school.
One of the best documented methods for determining the Earth's roundness was first performed (to our knowledge) by the ancient Greeks. This was achieved by comparing the shadows of sticks in different locations. When the sun was directly overhead in one place, the stick there cast no shadow. At the same time in a city around 500 miles north, the stick there did cast a shadow.
If the Earth were flat then both sticks should show the same shadow (or lack of) because they would be positioned at the same angle towards the sun. The ancient Greeks found the shadows were different because the Earth was curved and so the sticks were at different angles. They then used the difference in these angles to calculate the circumference of the Earth. They managed to get it to within 10% of the true value – not bad for around 250 B.C.
Another piece of evidence for a globe is the difference between the night skies in the northern and southern hemispheres. The view is completely different because the Earth beneath you is pointing in a different direction. If the Earth were flat, the view should be the same. This can be made even easier by simply comparing when it is night and day in each country.
You can observe the planets as well. They all rotate, and watching over the course of a few days gives a clear picture they are spherical rather than flat. The chance that most of the planets are spherical but the Earth is flat seems very unlikely.
Fake science
But when science experiments are performed incorrectly they can appear to give the opposite result. If they are shared through social media, these false ideas can be spread quickly with no one to point out their flaws. One common example is the Bedford Level experiment, a form of which was first carried out in 1838 and used to "prove" the Earth was flat for over 30 years before an explanation was found.
This experiment involved placing a marker at a set height at either end of a canal about six miles long. If the Earth is round, then one marker should appear lower than the other when viewed at the same time through a telescope because the furthest marker would have fallen away with the curvature of the Earth. But it was reported that the markers are the same height, suggesting the Earth is actually flat. Modern day Flat Earth theorists still quote this experiment.
The problem is this doesn't take into account the optical effect of the air over the intervening water, which bends or "refracts" the light as it travels from the marker to the telescope and makes it look like they are the same height. The solution is to use multiple markers along the length of the canal which, when observed, all appear to be at different heights.
Perhaps the most impressive experiment that even schools can do today is to send a camera up in a high-altitude balloon. The footage will show that from a high-enough vantage point you can see the curvature of the Earth. This is what Mike Hughes will find if he ever makes his rocket work.
Ultimately, arguing on the internet is not the best way forward for any scientific endeavour. We need to provide the means for people to test these theories themselves and to understand the results they get.
New Disneyland Rides for 2017
If you've been to Disneyland before, you know what to expect, but what you may not know is what's new since then. To help you keep up with the changes, I've compiled a list of new rides at Disneyland and California Adventure.
I know everyone doesn't go to Disneyland as often as I do, so you'll find what's new in the past years below.

What's Coming at Disneyland in 2017
Rivers of America reopened after being closed for more than a year to make way for construction of the new Star Wars Land. Pirate’s Lair on Tom Sawyer’s Island, the Disneyland Railroad, Mark Twain Riverboat, Sailing Ship Columbia, and Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes are all open again
Nighttime show Fantasmic! returned on July 17, with new mist screens and effects.
This one is good news and bad news, as far as I’m concerned. In late 2016, Disneyland discontinued the eye-popping, lighted Paint the Night Parade. That’s the bad news. The good news is that the beloved Main Street Electrical Parade returned from Florida and I can’t wait to hear that cute little electronic music again. It is scheduled to be a limited run, ending on August 20.
This actually happened last year, but just barely. Late in 2016, the World of Color returned to its original version.
In early 2017, in anticipation of the new Beauty and the Beast film, the old Edleweiss Snacks in Fantasyland transformed into the Red Rose Taverne.
In California Adventure, Twilight Zone Tower of Terror closed in January. It returned as Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!
Also in California Adventure, Cars Land got a seasonal overlay for Haul-O-Ween, with the residents of Radiator Springs dressing up and celebrate Halloween as only a bunch of talking cars can.
The Grand Californian Hotel launched a major room upgrade project in early 2017 that will take most of the year to complete. Two more rides were added to the FastPass system: Matterhorn Bobsleds in Disneyland and Toy Story Midway Mania in Disney California Adventure. You can find out more about the new MaxPass system here.
Disney MaxPass: In early 2017, Disneyland announced that a new way to get FastPasses is coming. It's called Disney MaxPass which you can use on the Disneyland app to get your Fastpasses digitally.
What's Coming to Disneyland in 2018
Disneyland will get a new, Pixar-themed fireworks show. The Pixar Play Parade, which was previously California Adventure’s afternoon parade will to Disneyland.
In California Adventure, Paradise Pier transforms into Pixar Pier, with a new look and more characters from Pixar films including The Incredibles, Inside Out, and Toy Story. That includes building some new areas dedicated to Pixar films. Some or all of those changes may happen in 2018 or later.
At the D23 Expo in 2017, Disney also announced that Spider-Man and the Avengers will join what Disney is describing as a “completely immersive Super Hero universe” at California Adventure, but with no dates or details given.
The amazing Paint the Night parade will be back, but this time in California Adventure.
A new arrival point called Eastern Gateway will provide guests more choices for access and parking when it opens in late 2018. It will include a new parking structure with 6,800 spaces, a new transportation facility, and an elevated pedestrian bridge over Harbor Boulevard.
Coming to Disneyland in 2019: Star Wars Land (Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge)
It isn't open yet - and may not until 2019 - but you can keep up with the latest news about Disneyland's new Star Wars Land in this preview guide.
It wipes out Big Thunder Ranch, which closed permanently on January 10, 2017. Some backstage areas will move to other locations to make room for the 14-acre addition.
Coming: More Hotel Options
Good news is on the way for anyone who would love to have more hotel options, but it will be a couple of years at least before these projects are finished. The city of Anaheim has approved several new high-end hotels in the Disneyland area. A JW Marriott is set to begin construction in 2016 or 2017. Other projects will replace the 56-year-old Anaheim Plaza Hotel & Suites and the Anabella Hotel near the Anaheim Convention Center. Walt Disney Parks and Resorts has also announced a new hotel project near the theme parks.
What Was New at Disneyland - New Rides in 2016
Autopia got snappy new cars that Curbed LA says "look like something Magnum P.I. would drive." They're sleek, Honda-branded sports cars in red, black, white, royal blue, silver. The Disney Parks blog says improvements to this ride will continue throughout the year.
In August 2016 Disney surprised many of their fans by announcing that the nearly-new Paint the Night Parade would make its last run on September 5, but with brief returns during the holiday season, starting in November. The 60th-anniversary fireworks show Disneyland Forever and the World of Color water and light show at California Adventure Park also ended on September 5. The classic Fantasy in the Sky fireworks which dates to Disneyland's earliest days returned Friday through Sunday starting September 9.
There weren't any big, new rides at Disneyland in 2016, but big changes began as they worked to build the new Star Wars Land. Also related to Star Wars:
- The film Star Wars: Path of the Jedi replaced Captain EO.
- Jedi Training Academy got a new look. Jedi wannabes need to register to participate.
- The lower level of the old Innoventions building becae the Star Wars Launch Bay and the building was renamed Tomorrowland Expo Center.
- Space Mountain became Hyperspace Mountain with some new Star Wars-related theming.
- Star Tours became Star Tours the Adventure Continues. Characters from the latest film showed up in some of its story lines.
On January 10, 2016, these attractions closed for at least a year. Where noted, limited-time experiences are offered.

What Was New at California Adventure in 2016
A new “Frozen” musical replaced the long-running Aladdin show at the end of May.
Luigi's Rollickin' Roadsters opened in early March, replacing Luigi's Flying Tires with a more engaging experience.
A new film “Soarin’ Around the World” started showing on June 17, the day after it premiered at Shanghai Disneyland. The film follows the same general format as the original Soarin', but will feature locales from around the world.
What Was New at Disneyland in 2015
2015 was Disneyland's 60th anniversary, with a big “diamond” celebration.
At the Haunted Mansion, the Hatbox Ghost returned. He shows up just after you leave the attic, and has a fun effect that involves his head and the box.
At Matterhorn Bobsleds, the abominable snowman got an upgrade that made him more realistic.
Peter Pan emerged from refurbishment with some newly added effects.
A new seating system premiered for the Fantasmic! nighttime show, with reserved viewing areas that require a Fastpass, similar to the way World of Color operated since it first opened.
New Shows in 2015:
- Disneyland Forever: The fireworks show is dazzling, but the real stars of this show are the projections, which transform the storefronts of Main Street USA into a constantly-moving video montage. Besides scenes from beloved Disney films and an effect that makes the buildings look like they're dancing, there's also a magical snowfall.
- Paint the Night: If you remember the iconic Main Street Electrical Parade, this is its precious offspring, a colorful, sparkling show that uses more than 1.5 million LED lights.
- World of Color: The new show has more of a story line, but less of an "I want to sing along" feel. It still uses the same eye-popping light and water effects
- Mad T Party: At California Adventure, the popular night time dance party got a new look.
New at Disneyland in 2014
2014 brought only minor changes and additions.
After what seemed like the longest refurbishment in Disneyland history, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad reopened, with a new, silky-smooth track and a fun new ending.
Longtime musical act Billy Hill and the Hillbillies played their final day of performances at Disneyland Park on January 6, 2014.
New Disneyland Rides in 2013
No major updates happened at Disneyland and California Adventure in 2013.
Fantasy Faire moved to a new home near Sleeping Beauty Castle. It gives princesses and knights of all ages a role in a charming storytelling experience and a nicer place to meet and greet their favorite Disney princesses. A new show called Mickey and the Magical Map also opened at the Fantasyland Theatre.

- Cars Land in California Adventure opened in 2012
- Also at California Adventure, San Francisco chocolate maker Ghirardelli opened a new soda fountain and chocolate shop
- For the first time in 20 years, new music was playing as you enter Main Street U.S.A.
- Matterhorn Bobsleds got new cars, with three seats per car, two of them linked together to accommodate 6 guests. And after a long hiatus, the mountain climbers came back.

Accessibility
Most Disneyland rides are accessible even if you have mobility challenges. However, many of them require you to transfer into the ride vehicle by yourself or with assistance from your traveling companions. Only a few have steps you can't bypass, including Tarzan's Treehouse, the railroad station at Main Street, U.S.A. , and the Columbia Sailing Ship.If you have a hearing impairment, stop at Guest Relations (in City Hall, on your left as you enter Disneyland) to pick up assistive listening devices and handheld caption controls used for some rides.You can also stop at City Hall to get a pass that lets you bypass the long lines if you can't stand in them. You don't need a doctor's note, but you will be asked to explain what you need

Flik's Flyers at Disney California Adventure
Flik's Flyers is one of the cute little rides in Bug's Land that are tame enough for very small children and so huggably darling that you won't be able to resist taking pictures of them.
What would happen if a bunch of enterprising insects decided to build a carnival ride? It might look a lot like Flik's Flyers. Suspended baskets attached to balloons rotate around a central column. Leaves are stitched together to make "balloons," and twigs attach them to ride vehicles made from empty boxes of cookies, raisins, apple sauce, and carry-out Chinese food.
Even the wait time sign looks like a big silver button. A spinning pie pan on top of an ice cream container in the middle hides the mechanism that makes it turn. It's so all cute that it's worth a look even if you don't want to ride.
All of Flik's Fun Fair is geared toward small children. The rides are gentle and cute, with no pesky height limits. Your little ones will love it, but kids who are over "baby rides" may turn up their...
How to Have More Fun on Flik's Flyers
- Flik's ride is similar to Dumbo and Autopia in Disneyland. Riders control the vertical motion of their vehicle and you can stay close to the ground if you want.
- If your child wants to ride in the animal crackers box, don't make them get into the raisin box instead. If that box is occupied, ask the Cast Member if you can wait until next time and get into the seat of their dreams.
- In case the wait is making your kids anxious, you can play a fun game of "I spy" with all the cute things around you.
- Look for the one four-leaf clover among the 74 three-leafed ones
- Very small riders may not be able to see out over the sides of the ride vehicles and lap sitting is not allowed for safety reasons. You can watch for a minute to see whether you think it's too high or not.

Everything You Need to Know About the Next Five Years of Disney Parks
At this weekend’s annual Disney fan conference, D23 Expo, the company revealed exciting intel about the parks’ next decade. On the agenda? Three new lands for the parks in California and Florida, plus major updates to familiar attractions. Read on for how these announcements will affect your future trip.
Star Wars land is coming and it will be awesome.
Disney confirmed on Saturday that Star Wars lands are coming to Disneyland in California andDisney Hollywood Studios in Florida. Details are scant, but there are already plans for two rides—one allowing guests to take control of the famed Millennium Falcon, and another “putting guests in the middle of a climactic battle”—as well as a fully immersive port town manned by familiar people (and creatures!).
If it sounds similar to Universal’s The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, that’s actually the point: at over 14 acres each, it marks Disney’s largest single-land expansion, and the brand’s best chance keep up with Universal’s recent rising ticket sales.
A Star Wars Launch Bay is planned to open in early 2016 in both California and Florida, featuring an interactive experience with video games, movie previews, and—of course—exclusive merchandise for sale. Space Mountain at Disneyland will become Hyperspace Mountain, themed as a Star Wars adventure through space, while Disney Hollywood Studios will get an improved Star Wars fireworks show on weekend nights, featuring the famed score by John Williams, newly recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra.
Toy Story land will make you feel like a kid again.
Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida will soon boast an attraction that makes visitors feel toy-sized, as if shrunken down to the level of Buzz and Woody. While Toy Story land currently exists in two parks overseas, this iteration will present rides exclusive to the U.S. The first new ride, which will feature little green aliens pulling you away from a looming claw, sounds similar to the setup of Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree at California Adventure. The Slinky Dog roller coaster, which was previewed at the D23 expo, will be completely one-of-a-kind.
And don’t forget about AVATAR Land, Disney’s own Pandora:
The World of Avatar is aiming to blow people away. The backstory is shaky at best—the war is long over, a travel company has stepped in, and the Na’vi are happily welcoming humans—but with floating mountains and a glowing world that transforms at night, it’s set up to be pure magic. Disney announces new Marvel attraction in Anaheim and the name of its Star Wars land
with demand continuing to grow for Disney parks and movies, the entertainment giant announced plans to add new attractions throughout its parks, including a new Marvel superhero expansion in Anaheim.
During its fan exposition D23 in Anaheim, Disney officials on Saturday revealed details of planned attractions at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim and at its Florida theme parks Walt Disney World, Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
Construction has been continuing for months on a new Star Wars land, but the name was first revealed at the expo: Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.
At Disneyland, the $1-billion project will include two attractions, a ride that lets guests fly the iconic spaceship the Millennium Falcon and another that throws visitors in the middle of a battle between the Resistance and the First Order.
Bob Chapek, chairman of Disney’s parks and resorts, hinted that the 14-acre expansion will include interaction with various Star Wars characters, including Rex the droid, who may serve as a DJ in the land’s cantina.
An expansion to include Marvel superhero characters at Disney California Adventure has been rumored for months, especially since the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror ride was revamped to Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout.
To make room for the Marvel expansion, Disney fans have predicted that the park would have to close several less-popular attractions in the nearby A Bug’s Land area and also expand into an adjacent parking lot. Chapek gave no details, except to say: “We keep moving forward and trying new things.”
In other plans for Disney California Adventure, Paradise Pier will be converted to Pixar Pier next summer, to include characters from the movies made by Pixar Animation Studios, a subsidiary of Disney. A Pixar parade and fireworks show is also expected. Also, Cars Land will be remade this fall for Halloween.
Turning to the Florida parks, he also announced a new Mickey and Minnie Mouse-inspired ride at Hollywood Studios called Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railroad, using what Chapek called “2½ D” instead of 3D technology.
A ride based on the movie “Ratatouille” will be built at Epcot, a ride based on the “Tron” movie and video game will be built at Walt Disney World in Orlando, and an overhead tram ride will be added to connect the parks in Florida, he said.
Chapek said he hoped to have many of the projects finished in time for the 50th anniversary of Walt Disney World in 2021.

The immigration chief in Calais has said the UK has created "a magnet for illegal immigrants."
Philippe Mignonet, the French port town's deputy mayor, claimed up to 40 migrants a night were getting through to the UK, despite the UK and French border agencies' efforts to stop them.
He also accused Britain of hypocrisy for talking tough on immigration whilst allowing migrants to stay in the country, and called for border controls - a fundamentally "British problem" - to be transferred from Calais to Dover.
He told the Daily Telegraph: "The quickest, most radical and easiest solution would be simply to shift the border from Calais to Dover and Folkestone and then the problem
wouldn't be handled in France but Britain.
"The ease with which illegal immigrants can work on the black market in Britain, coupled with the fact that migrants' family members can more easily join them, means that Britain is a magnet for illegal immigrants."
French interior minister Manuel Valls last week pledged police reinforcements for Calais, where many migrants make or attempt the Channel crossing, to deal with migrants.
He also said he had invited Home Secretary Theresa May to visit the town next year to renegotiate an arrangement under which Britain pays towards the policing of migrants in Calais, with British police and border officials operating on the French side of the Channel.
The Public Accounts Committee last week charged the Border Agency with failing to meet eight of its 19 performance targets.
A decision to prioritise passenger checks last year meant that illegal immigrant checks on freight had been suspended, the committee said.
Committee chairwoman Margaret Hodge said: "The Border Force prioritised passenger checks on arrival at the expense of other duties and weakened the security of our borders.
"The force neglected to examine freight for illicit goods, neglected to check lorries in Calais for concealed illegal entrants, and failed to check passengers coming into Britain on private planes or boats, potentially letting billionaire gangsters off the hook."
